JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to officiate the inaugural Google Cloud Summit Africa this Wednesday at the Sandton Convention Centre. The landmark event in Johannesburg is poised to highlight the transformative power of cloud computing and artificial intelligence across the continent.
Convened under the strategic theme “Google Cloud is building for Africa,” the summit serves as a critical nexus for global technology innovators, African policymakers, and leading industry captains. According to a statement from the Presidency ahead of the gathering, the event is specifically designed to showcase how next-generation digital tools can reshape the continent’s economic landscape. Furthermore, the summit will feature the unveiling of significant new technology investments within South Africa.
This tech-focused initiative aligns seamlessly with the nation’s broader economic blueprint. Earlier in March of this year, President Ramaphosa hosted the 6th South Africa Investment Conference, anchoring his strategy on the “3 D’s” framework: Decarbonisation, Digitisation, and Diversification. That conference also heavily emphasized improving the Ease of Doing Business as a cross-cutting priority to attract global capital.
During that same period, the head of state launched the second phase of the Presidential Investment Mobilisation Drive, setting an ambitious target to secure R2 trillion in fresh investments between 2026 and 2030.
The financial commitments expected from Google at this week’s summit are tailored to directly bolster this national investment drive. Beyond direct financial injections, the Presidency noted that Google’s strategic announcements will advance the government’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) agenda. Additionally, these commitments are set to reinforce vital public-private partnerships focused on artificial intelligence skills development and the formulation of cohesive national tech policies throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
