JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG — Suspended Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence, Major-General Feroz Khan, is in critical condition and undergoing surgery after being ambushed in an apparent targeted shooting in Houghton, Johannesburg. The high-profile attack occurred just days before he was scheduled to testify at a major commission of inquiry.

Ambush in Houghton
According to sources at the scene, the incident unfolded while Khan was traveling in a Suzuki vehicle close to his residence. Witnesses reported seeing a white Mercedes-Benz pull up before two men exited the car and opened fire, striking the senior police officer multiple times.

Law enforcement and forensic teams have cordoned off the Houghton crime scene, actively combing the area for evidence. While the exact circumstances surrounding the ambush remain unclear, authorities are treating the scene as a targeted hit.

Medical Status and Family Silence
Following the shooting, Khan was rushed to nearby Netcare Milpark Hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery.

His family and legal representation were seen at the medical facility monitoring the situation. However, both parties have maintained strict silence regarding the incident. Family members declined to speak to the media, and his lawyer outright refused to answer any questions regarding Khan’s condition or the events that transpired.

Looming Madlanga Commission and Legal Troubles
The shooting carries significant weight given Khan’s current legal and professional standing. He was slated to make a highly anticipated appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday, July 1.

Khan has been deeply implicated in several high-profile investigations during his tenure. These include allegations of high-level corruption, illicit precious metals trading, and his involvement in the controversial 2021 Aeroton drug bust.

Beyond the upcoming commission inquiry, the suspended Major-General is also facing separate criminal charges at the Kemp Park Magistrate Court. These charges stem from his arrest in May and are directly linked to ongoing allegations surrounding the illicit precious metals trade.

As of now, police have yet to release an official statement confirming the finer details of the attack or establishing a motive. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
