HARRISMITH — Law enforcement officials have confirmed a breakthrough in a provincial case, announcing that the Harrismith double murder suspect has been apprehended one day after two young brothers were fatally assaulted on an agricultural property. The 26-year-old man is now facing multiple charges following the incidents on Toekoms Farm.

The accused was taken into police custody on Thursday, 25 June 2026. His capture occurred at the exact Toekoms Farm location where the violent crimes took place. He is officially facing two counts of murder and is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June 2026.

The events unfolded on the afternoon of Wednesday, 24 June 2026. At approximately 14:15, the two brothers—identified as 14-year-old Thabiso Lakaje and his 9-year-old sibling Reanetswe Lakaje—were severely assaulted by the suspect on the farm. The exact motive for the attack remains unknown as detectives continue their investigation.

A private security guard on the property made the discovery near the door of the siblings’ residence. He found the children with their mouths and hands tightly fastened using cloth. The guard immediately notified the farm manager to initiate an emergency response.

Upon discovery, the older sibling, Thabiso, was already deceased. Emergency responders rushed the younger boy, Reanetswe, to a nearby local hospital, but he subsequently died from his injuries.

The boys’ mother, who was at work during the afternoon assault, was notified of the incident afterward.
