STANDERTON — A 55-year-old man is facing illegal firearm possession charges following a targeted Standerton arrest at Grootdraai Dam this past weekend. The South African Police Service (SAPS) seized a 9mm pistol and multiple rounds of live ammunition after acting on a tip-off.

The operation was launched on Saturday, 20 June 2026, after law enforcement received intelligence regarding an individual harboring an unlicensed gun in the Standerton area. Officers executed a follow-up tactical response and successfully tracked down a male suspect who matched the initial description provided by the informant.

Upon making contact, police officials identified themselves and stated the reason for their intervention before conducting a thorough search of the individual and his personal effects. This search yielded a 9mm handgun along with 22 rounds of live ammunition, which were hidden inside a bag carried by the suspect.

Investigators noted that the 55-year-old could not produce a valid firearm license or offer any legal justification for having the weapon and bullets in his possession. Consequently, he was taken into custody and formally charged with the illegal possession of both a firearm and ammunition. The confiscated weapons have been logged as evidence and will be utilized in the continuing legal proceedings.

The accused is slated to make his first court appearance at the Standerton District Court on Monday, 22 June 2026.
