PRETORIA, South Africa — The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has praised citizens for their overwhelming participation during the recent voter registration weekend, a critical milestone ahead of the upcoming local government elections. Masego Sheburi, the IEC’s Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, highlighted that the drive successfully registered hundreds of thousands of new voters, driven largely by youth participation, despite inclement weather across much of the country.

Record Interactions and a Youth Surge
Over the two-day period, the commission interacted with nearly 2.9 million citizens. Of that total, 2.5 million people braved the chilling weather to visit voting stations near their residences. Additionally, the commission processed 362,000 transactions through its online voter registration platform, accounting for 12% of the weekend’s total traffic.

Out of the 2.9 million interactions, the IEC successfully registered 477,000 first-time voters. Sheburi noted a significant demographic shift, revealing that 80% of these newly registered voters are young people under the age of 29.

Reversing the Voters Roll Decline
The successful registration drive has brought the country’s total number of registered voters to 28.5 million. This marks a notable shift from the 27.7 million certified voters on the roll during the 2024 national elections.

Historically, the voters roll experiences a “net decline” between election cycles due to factors such as mortality. Sheburi explained that between the 2024 elections and May of this year, the roll lost in excess of 1.3 million people. However, the continuous availability of the online registration platform has helped invert this phenomenon. Over the past two years, more than 1.6 million people registered online between elections, resulting in a net growth of 300,000 on the voters roll prior to the recent registration weekend.

Gender Demographics and Digital Engagement
The registration weekend also reinforced existing trends regarding gender representation on the voters roll. Females continue to dominate the roll, averaging 54% of the total registered voters. Sheburi confirmed that this trend held true throughout the weekend, with females leading the turnout across all age categories, including the youth cohort and the online registration platform.

Digital engagement remained remarkably high, with the IEC website recording over 12 million visits during the two days. The most frequently accessed pages were the voter registration status checker and the voting station finder, a tool that allows citizens to input their address and receive directions to their nearest polling station.

Upcoming Registration Dates and Special Votes
Looking ahead, the IEC has confirmed that August 1 and 2 will serve as the final in-person voter registration weekend. The online registration platform, however, will remain accessible to the public until the election is officially proclaimed by the Minister of Cooperative Governance.

Regarding special votes—such as those required for individuals who will be working on election day or cannot vote at their designated stations—Sheburi clarified that specific dates are premature at this stage. Once the election is officially called, the commission will publish a comprehensive election timetable. This document will outline all critical dates, including the opening and closing periods for special vote applications.
