DURBAN — Four Durban metro police officers have been arrested and immediately suspended following allegations of extorting a local businessman in the KwaSanti area.
The apprehensions are the result of a targeted investigation into the incident, which authorities say took place on Monday, 15 June 2026. Following the probe, the four authorised officers were taken into custody and formally charged with extortion. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has assumed control of the docket and is actively leading the ongoing criminal investigation.
The accused made their initial appearance before the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 19 June 2026, where they were successfully granted bail.
In response to the arrests, the Durban Metropolitan Police Service (DMPS) confirmed that the implicated officers have been placed on suspension. This administrative action will remain in effect until the finalization of both the SAPS criminal trial and the department’s internal disciplinary hearings.
