WATERBERG DISTRICT — A fatal Waterberg rhino poaching shootout has resulted in the death of one unidentified suspect and the recovery of three white rhinoceros carcasses following a late-night confrontation with law enforcement.
The deadly exchange unfolded at approximately 23:00 on Friday, 19 June 2026, on a rural property within the Pienaarsrivier policing precinct. Members of an Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) were executing standard perimeter patrols when the sound of three gunshots echoed through the area, prompting an immediate tactical response.
To minimize risk and maximize situational awareness, officers deployed aerial drones to scan the terrain for both the gunmen and potential wildlife casualties. The unmanned aircraft successfully pinpointed a group of suspected poachers—observed carrying a rifle and a backpack—and transmitted their real-time coordinates to the ground teams.
As the suspects attempted to escape into the dense, nearby bushland, the tracking operation escalated. While following one of the fleeing individuals, the APU operatives and their drone were suddenly ambushed with gunfire. Law enforcement personnel returned fire in self-defense, striking and fatally wounding one of the attackers.
A search of the fatally wounded man revealed no form of identification. However, investigators recovered a firearm lying next to his body. At the scene of the wildlife slaughter, authorities confiscated a sheathed knife and an additional empty sheath.
Following the gunfire, the aerial drones continued their sweep and confirmed the worst fears of the patrol: three fresh white rhino carcasses scattered across the farm. Two of the animals had already been dehorned by the poachers, while the third remained intact.
Addressing the violent clash, Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe emphasized the severe risks faced by conservation officers. “Rhino poaching is a serious organised crime that threatens our wildlife and the safety of our members,” Hadebe stated. “This incident shows our Anti-Poaching Units will respond decisively to protect our natural heritage.”
Local authorities have officially registered a multi-count case encompassing rhino poaching, murder, and attempted murder. A massive manhunt is currently sweeping the region as police track down the remaining unidentified male suspects who fled the scene.
