GEORGE, WESTERN CAPE — Residents from Thembalethu took to the streets on Friday, marching to the Garden Route District Municipality offices to demand stricter government enforcement of illegal immigration, labor, and business regulations. The peaceful demonstration highlighted growing community concerns over undocumented workforces, unlicensed enterprises, and the exploitation of vulnerable workers.
During the protest, a community spokesperson outlined the marchers’ core grievances, emphasizing that illegal immigration and labor law violations are placing immense pressure on local communities. The representative specifically highlighted the exploitation of undocumented foreign nationals, noting that migrants from the north are frequently used as cheap labor or victimized due to their lack of proper documentation.
“We are saying that the law must take its course,” the march organizer stated. “If you find that someone is employing an illegal immigrant, it’s a criminal offense based on the law, and the law must be enforced.”
The community spokesperson further suggested that if government departments are citing a lack of resources to enforce these regulations, they should partner with relevant sectors to train and employ young people to implement these critical duties in the field.
A formal memorandum of grievances was handed over to municipal officials at the conclusion of the march. The document explicitly calls for rigorous inspections of local businesses, comprehensive checks on immigration statuses, and decisive action against employers who hire undocumented workers.
In response to the community’s demands, a municipal spokesperson assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed through existing governmental structures. The representative explained that a district coordinating forum—comprising mayors, municipal managers, and various government departments—would convene to ensure the raised issues find practical expression.
“We are encouraged by the behavior of the marchers. We think it was a peaceful, successful march,” the municipal representative said, expressing hope that the demonstration serves as a model for the rest of the country. “We hope that this is replicated throughout the country and that we deal with these matters in terms of the law and without resorting to violence.”
The demonstration comes at a critical time, as tensions surrounding immigration have recently sparked unrest in various parts of the Garden Route. However, organizers emphasized that this specific demonstration was strictly focused on raising concerns and delivering their memorandum through peaceful, lawful protest.
