BEKKERSDAL — Law enforcement authorities have confirmed the latest Bekkersdal illegal mining arrests, taking seven suspects into custody during a coordinated raid in the West Rand District.

The enforcement action took place on Thursday, 18 June 2026, under the umbrella of the ongoing Operation Prosper. This integrated initiative is specifically designed to dismantle illicit extraction networks and apprehend undocumented immigrants operating within identified provincial hotspots.

The multidisciplinary tactical team deployed for the raid included personnel from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), operating alongside the West Rand Public Order Policing (POP) and Visible Policing units.

During the sweep of the Bekkersdal policing area, officers confiscated a variety of mining equipment and illicit resources. The seized evidence inventory consisted of:
– Four hammers
– Two spades
– One pick
– One phenduka
– One steel chain
– Two bags containing gold-bearing material

The seven detained individuals are currently being held on dual charges relating to illegal mining operations and the contravention of immigration regulations. The suspects are expected to make their first court appearance shortly to formally answer to the allegations.
