
PHABENI, MPUMALANGA — A 69-year-old Canadian tourist has died following a tragic Kruger National Park shooting, leading to the arrest of a 38-year-old private tour guide. The fatal incident occurred at a concession-operated braai area near the Phabeni Gate, prompting authorities to open a culpable homicide case.
Fatal Accident at Phabeni Gate
The deadly accident took place last night within the borders of the world-renowned wildlife reserve. According to initial reports, the incident unfolded at a braai area operated by a private concession near the Phabeni Gate in Mpumalanga.
The 38-year-old private tour guide, whose identity has not yet been released, was handling a firearm at the time of the incident. The situation rapidly escalated when the weapon discharged, fatally striking the 69-year-old visitor.
Police Investigation and Spokesperson Statement
Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo provided a detailed account of the sequence of events that led to the fatal Kruger National Park shooting.
According to Colonel Masondo, the incident began when one of the guests approached the tour guide and asked if the firearm he was carrying was a real weapon. While attempting to prove the authenticity of the gun, a fatal mistake was made.
“As he was trying to demonstrate to him that indeed it was a real firearm, it is reported that the firearm discharged,” Colonel Masondo explained.
The bullet struck the Canadian tourist in the upper body. Despite immediate emergency responses, the victim was certified dead at the scene.
Charges Filed and Ongoing Investigation
Following the tragic event, the 38-year-old tour guide was taken into custody. Authorities have officially charged him with culpable homicide, as well as the reckless handling of a firearm.
Colonel Masondo confirmed that the police have formally opened a case docket for both charges. The investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge and the handling of the weapon at the concession area remains ongoing.
Authorities are expected to continue their inquiries as the case proceeds through the local judicial system, emphasizing the strict regulations regarding firearm handling in both private and public tourist spaces.
