MAGALIESBURG — In a significant crackdown on illegal weapons, the South African Police Service in Magaliesburg successfully intercepted a cache of unlicensed firearms during a recent operation, resulting in the recovery of eight AK-47 rifles and the detention of four individuals.
The tactical intervention occurred on the morning of June 16, 2026, when law enforcement officers were conducting a patrol along the R24 highway. During their sweep, the team spotted a suspicious setup involving a Volvo truck displaying Namibian license plates, which was parked on the roadside with a Mazda sedan positioned directly behind it.
Officers kept the vehicles under surveillance and observed two males transferring a large mielie bag from the cargo area of the truck into the boot of the sedan. Recognizing the potential for illicit activity, the police unit rapidly moved in to confront the individuals. A subsequent search of the grain bag revealed the hidden cache of the assault rifles alongside seven empty magazines. Following the discovery, all four men at the scene were taken into custody and formally charged with possessing illegal guns.
Authorities are now focusing on the forensic analysis of the confiscated weaponry. The recovered firearms have been forwarded for comprehensive ballistic testing to determine whether they were utilized in previous criminal incidents. Meanwhile, the detained men will undergo extensive police profiling to map out their potential connections to broader syndicates operating within the province.
