IPELEGENG, NORTH WEST — Residents of Ipelegeng Township in the North West province are expressing growing frustration over significant upgrade delays at the local Motoro Sports Ground. The community is demanding transparency regarding the stalled R10 million project, which was initially slated to provide critical recreational facilities to keep local youth engaged and away from harmful activities.
Local sports facilities are widely regarded as essential breeding grounds for emerging athletic talent and safe havens for young people. However, the prolonged stagnation at the Motoro site has sparked serious concern among locals. Community members argue that the incomplete state of the facility is directly contributing to rising social ills, particularly substance and alcohol abuse, which frequently plague the area over weekends when young people have nowhere else to go.
According to residents, the construction began around October or November of last year, with local expectations that the upgrades would be finalized by July or August of this year. Instead, locals are left with an unfinished building and no sign of a promised tennis court. Community leaders expressed dismay, noting a stark disconnect between the actual physical state of the ground and the optimistic progress reports previously issued by local authorities.
In response to the mounting public outcry, the provincial Department of Sports and Recreation was approached for clarity on the situation. A spokesperson for the department indicated that the administrative and operational issues surrounding the stalled construction must be addressed directly by the local government.
Consequently, the department redirected inquiries to the Mamusa Local Municipality. Residents, alongside provincial officials, are now waiting for the Mamusa Local Municipality to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the exact bottlenecks that are keeping the highly anticipated community project at bay.
