CAPE TOWN — Authorities successfully intercepted a major wildlife trafficking attempt at the Cape Town International Airport this past Friday, resulting in the seizure of 150 live venomous scorpions concealed within a suspect’s personal belongings.
The operation was carried out through a collaborative, intelligence-led initiative involving the Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit alongside Cape Nature. Law enforcement officials acted on a tip-off regarding an individual transporting restricted creatures through the terminal.
After securing a physical description of the target, officers intercepted a 28-year-old male suspect on Friday, 12 June 2026. A subsequent search of his baggage revealed the prohibited creatures tucked between his garments.
The man was immediately detained for violating the Nature and Environmental Ordinance Act, specifically relating to the illegal possession of a wild animal. While the exact monetary value of the confiscated arachnids remains under assessment, the creatures have been safely relocated to an authorized haven for proper care and safekeeping.
The accused is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 June 2026.
