The Transport Minister has urged the fuels industry to deepen collaboration with the government to build economic prosperity in South Africa. The remarks were made during the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa Annual Imbizo held at the Sandton Convention Centre this week.
Addressing the need for predictability in the sector, the Minister emphasized the necessity of strong partnerships among government, state-owned entities, regulators, investors, infrastructure users, and organized industry formations. It was noted that the challenges and opportunities within the logistics sector require a shared commitment and cannot be addressed by the government acting alone.
The Minister highlighted the strategic importance of the fuel industry, noting its role in enabling mobility, powering production, supporting trade and logistics, and contributing significantly to employment and investment. A resilient and sufficient fuel supply chain was affirmed as fundamental to the functioning of the economy. To support this, the government is committed to creating an enabling environment through effective policy regulation, infrastructure development planning, and the oversight of state-owned entities operating within the transport and logistics sector.
Future growth of the liquid fuels industry was stated to require modern, efficient, safe, and well-regulated infrastructure, supported by government frameworks that provide investor certainty, user transparency, and market confidence. The department is working closely with Transnet and the Transnet Ports Authority on initiatives to improve infrastructure planning, operational efficiency, safety, and long-term investment at the Island View precinct at the Port of Durban.
These interventions aim to ensure the precinct meets current demand requirements while positioning South Africa to accommodate future growth in fuel imports, storage capacity, and associated logistics services.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the sector, the Minister stated the objective is to create an efficient, competitive, and sustainable transport and logistics environment capable of meeting the needs of a growing economy. Collaborative efforts will ensure South Africa’s strategic infrastructure continues to support energy security, attract investment, and drive long-term economic prosperity.
