A 20-year-old man has been arrested on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice following the discovery of a burnt body in Orkney on Wednesday, 10 June 2026.

At approximately 06:00, mine security alerted police to a burnt panel van located in a remote veld behind Shaft No. 6. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a 71-year-old man in the back of the vehicle, which was burnt beyond recognition.

Investigators traced the vehicle to a residential address in Orkney. Unable to immediately access the locked property, police observed bloodstains on the driveway leading to an adjacent house. It was subsequently established that the suspect and the deceased were neighbors.

Officers gained entry into the unlocked neighboring residence, where they recovered a suspected murder weapon and the victim’s personal belongings, including a cellular phone.

The 20-year-old suspect was later traced to a local hospital, where he was arrested and placed under police guard.
