A 42-year-old Zimbabwean citizen, Edgar Maroto, has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison following the seizure of illegal explosives at the Beitbridge Port of Entry, the Limpopo Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (DPCI) confirmed.
The arrest took place on Friday, 10 April 2026, when alert personnel at the border post intercepted a truck. Officials from the Border Management Authority (BMA) stepped in to help apprehend the driver after noticing a South African Revenue Service (SARS) customs officer actively pursuing the vehicle.
A thorough search of the truck uncovered a large consignment of explosives. The Musina Local Criminal Record Center (LCRC) documented the scene, while the Musina Explosives Unit processed the evidence. Authorities confiscated 3,970 blasting cartridge tubes, 48 capsules of Cammex connectors, and 10 reels of detonator fuse. The Musina police took custody of the seized items, which carry an estimated street value of R400,000.00.
Following a comprehensive DPCI investigation, Maroto was convicted and sentenced on two primary charges:
Count 1: Unlawful possession of explosives, resulting in a 15-year prison term.
Count 2: Contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA), resulting in a 10-year prison term.
The court directed that five years of the 10-year POCA sentence would run concurrently with the 15-year main sentence, culminating in an effective 20 years of imprisonment.
