A coordinated response between alert residents and the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing (POP) unit resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man on charges of attempted rape and attempted kidnapping early Wednesday morning.

The incident unfolded at approximately 09:30 on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, in Phomolong, Hennenman. Members of POP Platoon 05, conducting scheduled crime prevention operations in the area, observed a group of community members running urgently in one direction. Recognizing signs of a developing crisis, the team immediately moved to assess the situation.

Near the local taxi rank, officers discovered a tense scene: an agitated crowd had surrounded a man wielding a garden spade who was forcibly dragging a 60-year-old woman. The POP unit acted decisively to de-escalate tensions, secure the area, and extract the victim from harm’s way. Both the survivor and the suspect were transported to Phomolong Police Station for protection, medical evaluation, and formal processing.

According to preliminary investigative findings, the suspect was tending to his garden at his Phomolong residence when he noticed the victim walking nearby. Allegations indicate he called out to her and made unwelcome sexual advances. When the woman attempted to escape, the suspect reportedly pursued her, overpowered her, and began dragging her back toward his property.

Witnesses from the community observed the attack and began organizing a response. The timely arrival and intervention of POP operatives prevented the incident from escalating into vigilante action or community-led violence.

The 29-year-old suspect remains in custody and will face formal charges of attempted rape and attempted kidnapping. He is scheduled to appear before the Hennenman Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

SAPS has acknowledged the crucial role played by vigilant community members while emphasizing that suspected criminal activity should be reported directly to law enforcement to ensure due process and the protection of all parties’ rights. The Service reaffirms its commitment to combating gender-based violence and violent crime through proactive policing and strengthened community partnerships.
