A 48-year-old man from Intabazwe, near Harrismith, has been arrested and charged with the alleged murder of his 43-year-old girlfriend, Lerato Mofokeng, also a resident of Intabazwe.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at approximately 19:00. Ms. Mofokeng reportedly confronted her boyfriend after observing him in the company of another woman. During the ensuing confrontation, the suspect allegedly assaulted her by striking her multiple times on the head with empty beer bottles.
The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. On Monday, 1 June 2026, she was transferred to a hospital in QwaQwa for further specialized care. Despite medical efforts, Ms. Mofokeng succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, 2 June 2026. Police were subsequently notified and responded to the hospital.
Following a prompt investigation, law enforcement officials traced and apprehended the suspect. He has been formally charged with murder.
The accused is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 4 June 2026, to face the murder charge. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have appealed to the public for any additional information that may assist the case.
