A 36-year-old Durban resident will spend the rest of his life in prison after the Durban Magistrate’s Court convicted him of raping a 12-year-old neighbour.
The offence took place on 31 December 2021, when the accused lured the minor to his flat and sexually assaulted her. The young victim did not immediately inform her parents about the attack. The crime was uncovered when the girl’s mother accidentally overheard her daughter describing the incident to a friend. Acting swiftly, the mother reported the matter to police.
Investigators from the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit took charge of the case. Through diligent investigative work, detectives built a strong prosecution dossier that resulted in the accused’s conviction and life sentence.
In addition to imposing life imprisonment, the court declared the offender unfit to possess a firearm in terms of applicable firearms legislation.
The case highlights the importance of community vigilance and the specialized response of the FCS Unit in pursuing justice for child victims of sexual violence. Support services were made available to the survivor and her family throughout the investigation and court proceedings.
