Nelson “Nkwenkwe” Dyantyi has been sentenced to 27 years in prison following his conviction for an armed robbery at a private hospital in Durbanville, a development welcomed by Western Cape SAPS management.
The crime occurred on 31 August 2023, when Dyantyi entered the healthcare facility through a rear window while armed with a firearm. He threatened both patients and staff before stealing cellular telephones, laptops, and wallets, then fled the premises.
The incident was reported to the Durbanville Police Station and allocated to Detective Warrant Officer Heiny Marais. Through meticulous investigative work, Marais identified Dyantyi as the suspect. A subsequent tracing operation led to his arrest later in 2023, and prosecutors successfully opposed his bail application.
Following a comprehensive trial, Dyantyi was found guilty on two counts: armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. In addition to the 27-year direct imprisonment term, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm in accordance with the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000.
Western Cape SAPS management affirmed that the substantial sentence underscores the justice system’s stance against violent crimes targeting vulnerable settings like healthcare institutions and highlights the effectiveness of dedicated police investigations in bringing offenders to account.
