HANIVILLE, PIETERMARITZBURG — A grieving family is demanding answers after 38-year-old Smangele Mkhize was found dead in her home on Saturday morning in what is being investigated as a suspected home invasion.
Mkhize was discovered with stab wounds to her neck. Her one-year-old son was found alive on a bed just meters from her body. According to family accounts, her teenage son discovered his mother’s lifeless body and immediately alerted his uncle—Mkhize’s brother-in-law—who then notified the rest of the family.
The scene remains cordoned off as authorities conduct their investigation. Community members gathered nearby expressed profound distress over recurring violence in the neighborhood.
A community activist, speaking on behalf of local residents, reiterated longstanding concerns about public safety in Haniville. “This is a crime-ridden area,” the activist stated. “We have repeatedly raised concerns about the mobile satellite police station nearby. If there were more officers and 24-hour visibility from police, perhaps crime in this area wouldn’t be so high.”
The activist emphasized that the current satellite police station lacks sufficient resources and consistent presence to effectively deter criminal activity in the community.
A family spokesperson indicated that relatives have their own suspicions regarding who may be responsible for the killing. They referenced a jersey and gate discovered at the scene allegedly linked to a known individual in the community, though they stressed these remain unverified allegations pending official police confirmation.
“Police are yet to respond to inquiries about whether investigations are ongoing or if any suspect has been apprehended,” the family spokesperson noted.
Local residents have previously advocated for enhanced law enforcement resources, including expanded staffing and round-the-clock operations at the nearby satellite police station. Community leaders argue that sustained police visibility is critical to preventing violent crimes like the one that claimed Mkhize’s life.
