MBOMBELA, Mpumalanga – Residents organized a march through the city’s central business district to submit a memorandum of demands to the mayor concerning undocumented foreign nationals operating within the municipality.
According to march organizers, the demonstration targeted areas in the CBD where shops are allegedly owned by foreign nationals operating without valid permits. Participants expressed concerns that individuals lacking legal authorization are running spaza shops and other commercial enterprises in the area.
The procession included Anderson Street, described by participants as a “red district” where they allege vulnerable young people are being coerced into prostitution. Organizers also raised concerns regarding alleged involvement in drug-related activities and negative impacts on municipal cleanliness.
The memorandum submitted to municipal leadership calls for:
– An investigation into whether foreign nationals operating CBD shops hold valid business permits
– Enforcement measures concerning individuals residing in the country without legal documentation
– Addressing community safety concerns in areas including Anderson Street
– Steps to improve public order and sanitation standards
Local law enforcement was deployed ahead of the march and remained on high alert throughout the event. Several businesses and a shopping center in the vicinity closed temporarily in anticipation of the demonstration. Police monitored the procession to ensure public safety and maintain order.
A spokesperson for the marchers stated that residents want the municipality to verify the legal status of foreign nationals operating businesses and to take appropriate action where permits are lacking. Participants emphasized that their demands center on lawful immigration enforcement and community welfare.
The mayor’s office is expected to review the memorandum and respond through official municipal channels. Authorities have not yet issued a public statement regarding the specific demands outlined in the submission.
Residents who participated in the march reiterated their call for coordinated action between municipal authorities and national immigration services to address concerns while upholding the rule of law.
