Police in Thohoyandou are monitoring an ongoing unrest situation at the University of Venda that began on Sunday night, 03 May 2026.

According to police reports, students launched protest action over grievances with the university management. During the unrest, students allegedly blocked roads leading to the university premises and vandalized several road signs.

Public Order Policing (POP) members were deployed to the scene to monitor the situation and maintain public order.

On Tuesday, 05 May 2026, students handed a memorandum of demands to university management.

Police have arrested three students, aged between 18 and 26, on charges of public violence and contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

The suspects were initially scheduled to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 08 May 2026. For safety reasons, the case has been transferred to the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, where the suspects are now expected to appear.

No state vehicles have been damaged during the protest action.

Police investigations are continuing.
