Tru-Cape’s commitment to community upliftment and sport was recently on full display as its sponsorship of the Weekend Warrior cycling event in Grabouw not only helped deliver a resounding success under challenging conditions, but also unlocked meaningful and lasting benefits for local grade R learners in Grabouw.

Hundreds of cyclists of all ages turned out on 18–19 April, braving the first winter rains and strong winds sweeping across the Western Cape. Despite the weather, the event drew enthusiastic entrants determined to take on the scenic yet demanding routes through the Elgin Valley.

“Of course, people were nervous about the weather, but it was inspiring to see how riders showed up and fully embraced the conditions,” said Shaun Glover, director at Red Cherry Events. “It speaks volumes about the South African spirit — resilient, adventurous, and always ready to find joy, no matter the circumstances.”

Race conditions held steady during both days of riding, with rain arriving only after the final finish on Sunday. Importantly, the event concluded without any serious injuries — only tired legs and triumphant smiles.

“That is what Weekend Warrior is all about — creating meaningful experiences for families and building lasting memories,” said Conrad Fick, marketing director at Tru-Cape.

Tru-Cape donates R70,000 to local school

Central to Tru-Cape’s involvement is a strong focus on community development. As part of its sponsorship, the company donated R70,000 to Grabouw High School — a contribution that will directly enhance the learning environment for its youngest learners.

Headmaster Herholdt Bezuidenhout expressed both surprise at the turnout and deep appreciation for the support. “Even in extreme weather, the riders showed incredible determination, and they loved every moment of it,” he said. “But beyond the race itself, Tru-Cape’s generous donation will make a meaningful difference in our school.”

The funds will be used to upgrade playground facilities at the school’s Grade R centre, where play is essential to early childhood development. In addition, inverter air-conditioning units will be installed in classrooms currently housed in temporary structures, improving comfort for learners throughout the year.

“At this foundational stage, a child’s environment plays a crucial role in their development,” Bezuidenhout added. “This support allows us to create a space where our learners can thrive — regardless of the season.”

Community connection and purposeful partnerships

Riders experienced routes that wound through vineyards, Tru-Cape’s apple and pear orchards, and along the Eikenhoff Dam, showcasing the region’s natural beauty.

Off the bike, the vibrant race village offered a lively atmosphere for participants and spectators alike, rounding off a weekend that balanced challenge with celebration.

As riders crossed the finish line, they were welcomed with fresh Tru-Cape apples — a fitting reminder of the brand’s roots and its investment in both people and place.

“The Weekend Warrior continues to play an important role in fostering community connection and boosting tourism in the Elgin Valley,” said Roelf Pienaar, Tru-Cape’s managing director.

“The success of this year’s Weekend Warrior underscores the impact of purposeful partnerships. Through its sponsorship, Tru-Cape is not only supporting sport but also driving real change by helping to build stronger communities and brighter futures well beyond the event itself.”
