Nine male suspects were taken into custody during an operation at the Covid informal settlement in Atlantis on the morning of 16 April 2026. The arrests stem from an incident on Wednesday evening in which a truck was set alight near John Dreyer Road.

According to authorities, members of the Public Order Police were deployed to the area to monitor the situation following the vehicle fire. As officers approached the scene on foot, they observed the suspects carrying flat-screen television boxes. The group then began throwing stones at the officers. Police managed to repel the attack and apprehended nine individuals, whose ages range from 18 to 25.

A total of 17 television sets were recovered from the suspects.

The nine suspects face charges of theft and possession of stolen property. They are expected to make their first court appearance at the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court upon being formally charged.
