A 28-year-old man is in custody following his arrest in the early hours of Thursday, 19 February 2026, for the alleged rape and assault of his ex-girlfriend in Khayamnandi.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident was reported at the Despatch Community Service Centre on Wednesday, 18 February. The 25-year-old woman stated that at approximately 10:00 that morning, she was walking home when she was confronted by her former partner.
Police reports indicate the suspect allegedly assaulted her before forcing her to accompany him to his shack in Ooievaar Street. Once inside the residence, he is accused of further assaulting and raping her.
The victim’s cries for help attracted the attention of a neighbor, who intervened and assisted her in escaping from the shack. The two proceeded directly to the SAPS Despatch station to open a case.
Upon receiving the report, police officers immediately initiated a search for the suspect. The operation continued overnight and culminated in his apprehension at his residence in Khayamnandi during the early hours of Thursday.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kariega Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of rape and common assault.
