A 16-year-old boy was arrested earlier this week following a joint operation by the National Intervention Unit (NIU) and Gauteng Crime Intelligence for the alleged possession and distribution of explosives.
According to police reports, the team acted on intelligence-led information regarding suspects selling explosives in and around the Motlhakeng area. The intelligence reportedly directed authorities to a specific address in Roodepoort, where they apprehended the teenager.
During the search of the premises, law enforcement officials seized a cache of explosive materials. The recovered items include 50 blasting cartridges, 25 safety fuse connectors, and detonating cords.
The teenager is currently in custody. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with a focus on identifying the broader criminal networks involved in the illegal possession and distribution of explosives. Authorities note that such materials are frequently utilized in the commission of serious crimes, including cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies and illegal mining activities.
