Police responding to a security alert at Kloof Gold Mine on Thursday, 12 February 2026, came under fire from a group of approximately 100 illegal miners.
According to police reports, some of the miners were carrying rifles. Upon police arrival, the group dispersed and began shooting at officers. A shootout ensued between police and the illegal miners.
No injuries were reported. Police recovered AK-47 ammunition at the scene.
Authorities have stated that ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining in the West Rand continue.
