An intelligence-driven operation by the Middelburg Flying Squad led to the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of counterfeit goods valued at approximately R1 million on Tuesday afternoon.

The operation unfolded on November 4, 2025, around 12:30 PM on the N4 Road in Middelburg. According to police reports, members were conducting routine patrols and stop-and-search operations when they acted on intelligence received about a suspicious white 3-ton truck. The intelligence indicated the vehicle had been seen loading suspected illicit goods in Nelspruit.

Acting on this tip-off, officers began stopping trucks matching the description. Their efforts yielded a positive result when they intercepted a truck with Gauteng registration plates heading towards the N4 Middelburg Toll Plaza. The vehicle contained three occupants: a male driver and two female passengers from Mozambique.

Upon inspection, officers noticed the truck was secured with a seal. The driver allegedly claimed the truck was empty, prompting further questioning from police, who sought to understand why an empty truck would be sealed. When asked to produce a written document for the seal, the driver could not provide one. He also stated that he had given a lift to the two women along with their luggage.

A subsequent search revealed large boxes concealed under black refuse bags and wrapped in solatape. Inside these boxes, police discovered a large quantity of suspected counterfeit footwear, including sneakers, slides, soccer boots, and various brands of flip-flops.

Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was likely destined for Johannesburg.

The confiscated items include:

  • 15 large boxes of sneakers, flip-flops, and slides with various labels, colours, and sizes.

  • 52 large forensic bags, each with different serial numbers, containing sneakers, slides, and flip-flops of assorted labels, sizes, and colours.

The truck was also seized for further investigation.

All three suspects, aged between 30 and 38, were arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit goods and contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act. They are expected to make their initial appearance at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
