The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, is spearheading a decisive and uncompromising campaign to remove his uncle, Prince Andrew, from his formal roles and residence in an effort to protect the monarchy from further reputational harm, according to royal commentators.
The claims, detailed in a televised discussion, suggest the future King is taking a far harder line than his father, King Charles III, in managing the fallout from Prince Andrew’s association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
UK barrister and broadcaster Andrew Eborn stated unequivocally that Prince William is “ruthlessly leading efforts to strip him of his dukedoms, honours, his Royal Lodge access, and to shield the King from any more of this reputational damage.”
Eborn elaborated on the Prince of Wales’s approach, stating, “William is much more ruthless than his father. He’s looking for the future and the damage that Andrew is doing to the monarchy, so he probably wants to take it much, much further.”
This assessment was supported by royal historian Andrew Lowey, who also characterized Prince William as “much more ruthless than his father.” Lowey pointed to a specific incident at the funeral for the Duchess of Kent as a turning point, where Prince William was reportedly “incredibly uncomfortable” seeing Prince Andrew together with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. Shortly after that event, it was announced Prince Andrew would not attend the royal family’s Christmas celebration.
“There are no more kid gloves,” Lowey said. “He sees the reputational rot, if you like, from Andrew’s Epstein lies and he’s forcing basically this swift clean break before it festers further.”
The report also indicates that Prince William’s plans extend beyond his uncle. He is reportedly planning a wider “slimming down” of the monarchy, which could see a series of outer royals stripped of their princely titles. This potential purge could affect Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, and their children, Archie and Lilibet.
In a related development, pressure is mounting on Parliament to break with tradition and examine what the royal family knew about Prince Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein. Eborn explained that while questions casting reflections on the sovereign are typically “inadmissible in Parliament,” a number of MPs are now demanding a full investigation, arguing the “scandal has gone on far too long.”
Further compounding Prince Andrew’s position are newly disclosed documents revealing he has lived at the 30-room Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park for over two decades without paying rent. The property, which spans 40 hectares and includes multiple staff cottages, was secured by Prince Andrew in 2003 under a 75-year lease.
While he paid a £1 million upfront sum and is responsible for multi-million-pound maintenance costs, the arrangement has been described as a “peppercorn rent,” effectively a token amount. These financial revelations, alongside the ongoing scandal, are seen as severely damaging to the Duke of York’s public image as the institution moves to distance itself from him.
