When author Eliza Nevius sat down to write The Jaded Knight, she wasn’t just building a fantasy series, she was finding her own voice. The book’s heroine, Sadie Baker, is as stubborn and sharp as they come, but beneath the sarcasm lies a struggle with self-doubt and the fear of not measuring up. For Nevius, that wasn’t just fiction; it was personal.

“I see a lot of myself in Sadie,” she explains. “Her insecurity reflects a lot of the struggles with confidence I had, especially in the early days of writing. As she learns to trust her power, confront her fears, and carve out her place in a world that often underestimates her, I found I was going through a similar process of finding my voice and courage as a storyteller.”

That sense of parallel growth is what fueled Nevius as she shifted from nonfiction into fiction. A longtime fan of romantasy, she found herself in a book rut—nothing she picked up kept her attention. So she decided to write the story she wanted to read. The Jaded Knight grew out of that frustration and turned into something much bigger: a supernatural world that feels as grounded in late-night dive bars and road trips as it does in battles with witches, shifters, vampires, and fae.

“What inspired me most was the collision of the everyday with a fantasy overlay,” Nevius says. “Finding out what happens when a paranormal creature is navigating not only supernatural battles but also sarcasm, friendship, heartbreak, and late-night dive bars. Building that balance of real-world humor with high-stakes magic made the world feel alive to me.”

That approach gave The Jaded Knight its distinct tone, one where danger and drama never lose their edge, but the characters still feel like people you might know. Nevius wanted readers to laugh in one moment and feel the weight of a battle in the next, showing that fantasy can deliver both escape and relatability. By blending sarcasm, vulnerability, and supernatural stakes, she crafted a story that feels both otherworldly and grounded.

For readers coming in fresh, Nevius describes The Jaded Knight as “a rollercoaster ride full of sass, snark, action, and A LOT of slow-burn tension.” It’s part monster hunt, part character-driven drama, layered with laugh-out-loud banter and an undercurrent of romance that simmers beneath the chaos. But at its heart, she insists, it’s about something simple yet universal: finding your strength when the world doubts you, and having a little fun (and a lot of sarcasm) along the way.
