A joint intelligence operation between the Breederiver K9 Unit and Sea Fisheries authorities resulted in the seizure of over 13,000 units of abalone and the arrest of two suspects on Monday afternoon, 22 September 2025.

The successful interception followed the gathering of specific intelligence regarding a truck transporting the illicit cargo to Cape Town. Acting on this information, members of the operation located and stopped the vehicle at the N1 weighbridge in Rawsonville.

A subsequent search of the truck uncovered 13,341 units of abalone. The estimated street value of the confiscated contraband is R3.3 million.

An adult male and an adult female were arrested at the scene for the illegal possession of abalone.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be formally charged. Once charged, they will appear in the Worcester Magistrates’ Court.
