Inkosi Umhlabunzima Maphumulo House: Last night, an unruly and drunk driver wreaked havoc on the N2, Umtubatuba.
Three members of the Mavimbela family died weeks ago in a horrific accident on the same stretch of road.
This motorist was speeding and overtaking on a solid white line—ignoring the fact that it is unsafe to do so and also unlawful.
He drove into the oncoming traffic and almost crashed into the fully alert and vigilant Chief Provincial Inspector Thulani Mthembu.
Inspector Mthembu gave chase and stopped the vehicle about 1km away.
We commend motorists and members of the public who worked with our highly efficient, energetic, and dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate to ensure the arrest of this unruly motorist.
A breathalyzer test was conducted, and the motorist was found to be three times over the legal blood alcohol limit (which is less than 0.05g/100ml in South Africa).
The motorist was detained at KwaMsane Police Station with the case number 200/09/2025. He is expected to appear in court to face the following charges:
1. Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.
2. Reckless and negligent driving.
I have undertaken to attend some of the court appearances of drunk motorists to support our dedicated RTI Team.
Importantly, as an executive authority, I am pursuing the case of the mysterious release of a drunk driver who crashed into more than five cars on the N3 near Pietermaritzburg.
He fled the scene and assaulted an RTI officer.
It will be an abdication of my responsibility not to support our RTI team. They have responded positively and with agility to my mandate that they should be firm and sustain the Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa campaign.
The arrest of 93 drunk motorists over the weekend and an increase of the number of arrests to 293 since August 2025 is a clear indication of the efficiency and dedication of RTI.
