In a major breakthrough, a multidisciplinary law enforcement team has uncovered a sophisticated drug manufacturing laboratory valued at an estimated R350 million on a farm in Volksrust, Mpumalanga.
The discovery, which occurred on the border with KwaZulu-Natal, led to the arrest of six individuals. According to police, the group comprises five nationals from a North American country and a local caretaker.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the operation was launched after authorities received a tip-off regarding suspicious activities on the premises. The initial suspicion was raised by a strong, unusual chemical smell emanating from the farm buildings.
“A multidisciplinary law enforcement team, which included the Home Affairs department, proceeded to the farm,” stated the spokesperson.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects attempted to flee on foot into the surrounding area. While six were quickly apprehended, two other individuals, believed to be from West Africa, managed to evade capture by fleeing into nearby bushes. A manhunt is underway for these suspects.
The six arrested individuals are expected to be formally charged and appear in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court soon. The bust represents a significant blow to a suspected international drug manufacturing and distribution syndicate operating in the region.
