A 39-year-old man was fatally wounded in a shootout with police officers at Macibe Location outside Centane on Friday, September 12, 2025.
According to police reports, the incident began when officers attempted to conduct a routine stop-and-search of a Toyota bakkie in town. The driver of the vehicle refused to comply, accelerating away and initiating a police pursuit.
The chase continued until the bakkie reached Macibe Location, where the driver stopped the vehicle. Upon exiting, the suspect immediately opened fire on the pursuing police members. The officers returned fire, resulting in the 39-year-old suspect being fatally shot.
Following the altercation, a preliminary police investigation led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol and a magazine loaded with live ammunition from the scene.
In accordance with standard procedure, an inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances of the death. Additionally, an attempted murder docket has been registered for the suspect’s alleged actions against the police officers. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation of the incident.
