In a dramatic late-night operation, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Kidnapping Task Team successfully rescued an Indian businessman and reunited him with his family after a confrontation that resulted in the death of a high-profile suspect.
The rescue culminated a swift investigation into the businessman’s abduction. According to police reports, the breakthrough came on Wednesday evening near the R21 highway in Kempton Park. There, officers confronted the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping. A shootout ensued, during which the suspect was shot and killed.
The alleged kidnapper, known by the nickname “Dollarman,” was a significant figure on international crime watchlists. He was listed on SERNIC, Mozambique’s wanted persons database, for his involvement in several kidnapping-for-ransom cases in that country.
His criminal reach extended significantly into South Africa. SAPS confirmed that “Dollarman” was linked to at least five other kidnapping-for-ransom cases within the country, in addition to investigations for housebreaking, carjacking, and possession of unlicensed firearms.
Following the fatal shootout, police intelligence led them to a shack in Alexandra, where the kidnapped businessman was found safe. He was located shortly after midnight in the early hours of Thursday, 04 September 2025, and has since been safely reunited with his relieved family.
