The death toll from Saturday’s devastating head-on collision between a sugar truck and a light motor vehicle on the N2 near the Dokodweni Toll Gate has risen to six after the truck driver’s body was recovered from the wreckage.
Details of the Crash
The collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Authorities confirmed that three women and three men lost their lives in the crash. The truck, which was transporting sugar, reportedly slammed into the smaller vehicle with such force that it overturned, crushing the car beneath it.
Community and Official Response
Local residents expressed shock and grief, with many labeling the stretch of the N2 as a notorious hotspot for fatal accidents. “This road is dangerous—we’ve seen too many crashes here,” one resident told reporters.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Department spokesperson Mr. Ndabezinhle Sibiya stated that while the exact circumstances remain unclear, speeding is suspected to be a major factor.
