Two additional suspects arrested in connection with the torching of the Home Affairs office in Germiston are expected to appear in court today. This brings the total number of arrests to four following violent clashes between police and residents of Pharoe Park on Tuesday.
The unrest erupted during the eviction of hundreds of people from municipal-owned flats, allegedly due to non-payment of rent. During the clashes, the Home Affairs building was set alight, prompting a joint investigation by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The two new suspects, believed to be male, face charges of public violence, arson, and malicious damage to property. They were arrested on Wednesday as authorities gathered witness testimonies and evidence from the scene.
Meanwhile, the two other accused—both women—made a brief court appearance yesterday, where their case was postponed to next week. While they are not currently charged with arson, the magistrate indicated that additional charges could be added as investigations continue. If convicted, the accused could face a minimum of 15 years in prison.
Damage Assessment and Bail Considerations
Home Affairs officials are still assessing the extent of the damage, with early estimates suggesting repairs could cost millions of rand. The ongoing evaluation may influence the severity of the charges and sentencing if the suspects are found guilty.
Given the seriousness of the offenses, the case falls under Schedule 5 or 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act, meaning the accused will need to submit a formal bail application. Legal proceedings today are expected to focus on a possible postponement to allow for this process.
Authorities have urged anyone with further information to come forward as investigations remain active. The court is expected to provide more clarity on the charges and bail conditions as the case progresses.
Updates will follow as more details emerge from today’s hearing.
