The Democratic Alliance (DA) has officially announced Cilliers Brink as its mayoral candidate for the Tshwane Municipality, promising to restore effective governance amid growing dissatisfaction with the current administration.

The decision comes as pressure mounts on incumbent Mayor Nasiphi Moya following a Gauteng High Court ruling that found the municipality in breach of an order to upgrade the Fresh Produce Market. The court warned of potential legal consequences for both Moya and the municipal manager if urgent corrective action is not taken.

John Steenhuisen used the platform to sharply criticize the African National Congress (ANC)-led administration, accusing it of financial mismanagement and corruption. He highlighted the city’s staggering debt, which has surpassed R28 billion, attributing the crisis to poor revenue collection and wasteful spending.

“This city is not collecting enough, and service delivery is suffering,” Steenhuisen said. “They’ve failed to get even the most basic things right—wastewater, procurement, infrastructure. Instead of fixing pipes, they enable ‘tanker mafias’ to profit while residents suffer.”

Steenhuisen also took aim at ANC Deputy Mayor Modise, alleging a conflict of interest due to Modise’s undisclosed involvement in a security company doing business with the municipality. “It’s not about the people for them,” Steenhuisen declared. “It’s about their back pockets, their networks, and their luxury cars.”

In a fiery closing statement, Steenhuisen warned ANC officials to “put your Maserati on auction because you’re going to need the money after the next election,” signaling the DA’s confidence in reclaiming the metro.

The DA’s campaign will focus on rooting out corruption, improving service delivery, and ensuring financial accountability. With local elections looming, Brink’s appointment sets the stage for a heated political battle in Tshwane.
