South African communities are the breeding ground of young talent. If not nurtured, such talent often goes to waste. Investing in communities, especially disadvantaged communities, creates a ripple effect of positivity that can transcend borders and generations.

Reflecting its core value of offering everyone a better way forward, Michelin has reinforced its commitment to uplifting communities through its Care-In-Action initiative. This programme allows Michelin employees to nominate local non-profit organisations that align with Michelin’s values.

“In the spirit of Ubuntu, we are passionate about partnering with community organisations to provide opportunities for future generations, which is a heartfelt commitment for us. Michelin cares about giving people a better way forward,” says Elmarie Roberts, HR Director at Michelin.

Through Care-In-Action, two impactful NPOs – Mashup Community Development and the People Matter Foundation – were selected for financial support and mentorship.

Mashup Community Development in Westbury tackles social issues like unemployment, substance abuse, and gangsterism. With Michelin’s support, Mashup has introduced a sewing programme benefiting local women living with disability, empowering them with practical skills.

Chosen for its unwavering belief that everyone deserves care and dignity, the People Matter Foundation provides emergency support such as water access and food relief. With the support of the Care-In-Action initiative, the foundation has installed JoJo tanks in KwaZulu-Natal to improve water access. It has also partnered with local farmers to address food shortages through farming support and is currently building a tech centre to assist communities with computer literacy and digital access.

Looking ahead, Michelin will be hosting both organisations on 4 July 2025 for a NextGen Leadership Career Day at their office. This event aims to provide youth and community members with the opportunity to equip them with knowledge of the tyre industry, potential career paths at Michelin, connect with professionals, and gain valuable insights that can help shape their futures. The initiative is a timely close-out to Youth month and lead-up to Mandela Day on 18 July, when South Africans come together to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela by giving back.

The Care-In-Action initiative is more than a corporate responsibility. It’s about supporting communities and organisations that are making real changes in society. Michelin’s belief in care, compassion and action continues to drive lasting impact, one community at a time.
