Four men were fatally shot in a mass shooting early Wednesday morning in the Overcome Heights informal settlement in Muizenberg, Cape Town. The victims, aged between 20 and 37, were found dead on the side of Mountain Road, with their bodies discovered near different shacks in close proximity to each other.
Police Investigation Underway
The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that the bodies were discovered just before sunrise. Detectives from the Anti-Gang Unit have taken over the investigation, though no arrests have been made yet. Crime scene investigations were concluded by noon, and the bodies were removed from the scene.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, assuring that tip-offs can be made anonymously. “All information will be treated confidentially,” SAPS stated.
Community in Fear as Gang Violence Escalates
Residents of Overcome Heights refused to speak to the SABC, citing fear for their lives. However, a local ward councillor confirmed that gang-related violence has been increasing in the area.
“We’ve got gang infighting,” the councillor said. “There is one gang, the Junky Funky gang, and one of their members recently got out of prison and is trying to form a splinter group.”
The violence is reportedly spreading beyond Overcome Heights, with recent shootings in nearby Seawinds and Steenberg. The councillor warned that the situation is likely to worsen.
“This is unfortunately the start of something that is going to escalate. We need all services on the ground—this is urgent and serious.”
Increased Law Enforcement Presence Expected
In response to the surge in violence, the Anti-Gang Unit is expected to conduct operations in the area, with additional support from the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies.
As tensions rise, the community remains on edge, with fears that further bloodshed may follow unless immediate action is taken.
Anyone with information is urged to contact SAPS anonymously.
