A man accused of raping and murdering six-year-old Amantle Samane from Soweto made a brief appearance in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday, where he admitted to the horrific crimes.
Phethe Simiao confessed to the rape, murder, and kidnapping of the young girl, whose life was brutally cut short in October last year. The case was postponed to Friday to allow police to finalize their records and for sentencing proceedings to begin.
A Tragic Admission in Court
The court appearance was brief, as the High Court was occupied with another trial. However, Simiao’s legal team confirmed that he had chosen to plead guilty to all four charges against him after reviewing the evidence.
Advocate Mindi, part of Simiao’s defense, explained the decision: “After receiving and perusing the docket, we had thorough consultations with our client. He decided to plead guilty on all counts to avoid a lengthy trial and wasting the state’s time.”
Family’s Emotional Reaction
Brenda, a representative for Amantle’s family, described the emotional moment when they heard Simiao’s admission. “When she broke down into tears, it was tears of joy,” she said. “There was a time when he denied everything, but today, we finally got the truth.”
The family expressed gratitude for the legal process, though the pain of losing Amantle remains fresh. This month would have marked her seventh birthday—a milestone now overshadowed by tragedy.
Sentencing Expected Friday
The case has been postponed to Friday, where Simiao is expected to face sentencing. The prosecution will present its arguments, and the court will determine his fate.
As the community awaits justice, the heartbreaking case serves as another grim reminder of the violence faced by South Africa’s most vulnerable.
