Morocco is set to launch a massive $8 billion 5G network expansion, targeting 85% population coverage by 2030 as part of its broader digital transformation strategy. The initiative, involving the country’s major telecom operators, will also include significant fiber infrastructure upgrades to support next-generation connectivity.
Major Telecom Operators On Board
The North African nation has granted 5G licenses to its three leading telecom providers—Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco (formerly Medi Telecom), and Inwi (Wana Corporate)—for a combined $210 million. These companies are expected to cover 25% of the population by the end of 2025 before scaling up to 85% by 2030.
“The 5G network deployment will improve performance and has huge potential for all users and citizens,” said a government representative. “It will be operational by the end of this year in many cities, with gradual expansion.”
Phased Rollout with Strategic Focus
The initial phase will prioritize key urban centers, economic zones, technology parks, and industrial areas, with special attention given to universities, research centers, and critical industries like automotive and aeronautics. The government has allocated over $830 million to enhance mobile broadband, modernize existing networks, install new antennas, and upgrade data transmission systems.
Compared to 4G, 5G promises download speeds up to 100 times faster and ultra-low latency of just 1 millisecond—capabilities expected to revolutionize sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, digital services, and logistics.
Boosting Economic Competitiveness and Major Events
Morocco’s 2030 digital strategy aligns with its goal of modernizing the economy to remain competitive with neighboring and northern nations. The 5G rollout will also ensure seamless connectivity for major upcoming events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
“Delivery services and logistics are among the sectors that will expand with 5G deployment,” noted an industry expert. “This technology will enhance client satisfaction through improved speed, reliability, and connectivity—an amazing advancement for Morocco.”
