Farming organizations in KwaZulu-Natal have called on the government to urgently find alternative solutions to mitigate the impact of newly imposed US tariffs, warning that failure to act could devastate the already struggling agricultural sector.

The plea comes after the provincial Department of Agriculture held emergency talks with farmers in Durban yesterday, where industry leaders highlighted the severe consequences of the tariffs on key exports such as fruit and sugar.

Tariffs Compound Existing Crises

The new US duties, imposed under the Trump administration, have dealt a heavy blow to South African farmers, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, which is still recovering from recent natural disasters, including wildfires and devastating floods.

“With these tariffs, we are losing a lucrative market we’ve enjoyed for years,” said one industry representative. “About 24,000 tons of exports to the US are now at risk, which will drive up prices and hurt both consumers and farming communities.”

The ripple effects could be especially severe in rural and low-income areas, where communities heavily rely on affordable agricultural products.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease Concerns Add to Challenges

While the provincial agriculture department reported progress in containing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), officials acknowledged lingering concerns, particularly in communal farming areas.

“There are no reported cases currently because we’ve vaccinated in almost every affected area,” a department spokesperson said. However, challenges remain with commercial farmers, though stakeholders have agreed to collaborate rather than assign blame.

To date, over 500,000 vaccinations have been administered across the province.

National Farmers’ Indaba Planned

In response to the mounting pressures, the provincial government announced plans to convene a national farmers’ indaba, bringing together key stakeholders to develop long-term solutions for the sector.

As farmers brace for further economic strain, the call for swift government intervention grows louder, with the industry’s survival hanging in the balance.
