Tensions are rising among Ghana’s cocoa farmers as frustration over low prices reaches a boiling point. Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu, President of the Concerned Cocoa Farmers Association, has warned that farmers are planning a major demonstration this Monday, with some even threatening to cut down their cocoa trees and switch to rubber plantations or illegal mining (galamsey).

In a passionate statement, Bonsu called on government officials to reduce their salaries by 10% to support struggling farmers.

“When President said we should fasten our belts, they [officials] should fasten their belts too,” Bonsu said. “They should reduce their salaries to add to cocoa prices so farmers won’t suffer.”

He expressed deep concern over the growing unrest, particularly in the Western Region, where he plans to meet with farmers to address their grievances. “Farmers are trying to cut down their cocoa trees for galamsey or switch to rubber plantations. We need to talk to them—this is very dangerous,” he stressed.

Bonsu described the situation as a “very serious matter” and admitted feeling overwhelmed. “I have a whole lot of load on my head—it’s not easy at all,” he said, adding that he would travel to the Western Region immediately to engage with protesters.

The looming demonstration highlights mounting frustrations in Ghana’s cocoa sector, a critical pillar of the economy. If farmers follow through on their threats to abandon cocoa, it could have severe consequences for the country’s agricultural output and global cocoa supply.

Authorities have yet to respond to the farmers’ demands, but with protests imminent, pressure is mounting for swift government intervention.
