More than 3,000 learners from various schools in Vosloorus gathered at Thuto-Lesedi Secondary School today, demanding the removal of the principal following a brutal attack on a 16-year-old pupil last month. The victim remains hospitalized in ICU, fighting for his life and eyesight after being assaulted by a group of students in what authorities suspect was a gang-related altercation over a school bag.
Outrage Over Delayed Action
The incident, which occurred on July 23, sparked widespread anger after the victim suffered severe injuries, requiring emergency surgery. Parents and learners accuse school management of failing to prevent bullying and gang activity on campus.
School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson confirmed that disciplinary hearings for the five accused learners are set for Friday, but protesters argue that the principal should also be held accountable for negligence.
SGB’s Response
She revealed that the SGB conducted its own investigation after the school’s initial report lacked crucial details. “We were shocked to find that the attack was so severe,” she said, adding that the victim was left helpless during the assault.
Police have been criticized for their slow response, prompting the SGB to intervene. One suspect has been arrested, but she insists more must be done. “We even went to the suspect’s home to ensure justice,” she said.
Protests and Calls for Change
Today’s demonstration saw learners from multiple schools uniting against bullying, chanting slogans like “Enough is enough!” While the SGB urged students to return to class ahead of preliminary exams, tensions remain high.
The principal has been placed on temporary leave pending investigations. Meanwhile, community leaders and the Gauteng Department of Education are expected to address safety concerns in schools.
What’s Next?
With hearings underway and pressure mounting, the community awaits decisive action. As She stated, “We cannot send our children to school fearing for their lives.”
