The family of an 18-year-old learner from David Mama Senior School is calling for strong disciplinary action after a disturbing bullying incident was caught on video and widely shared online. The victim, who was assaulted while traveling home in a scholar transport vehicle, is currently receiving counseling as the community demands accountability.
Public Outrage and Calls for Action
The graphic video, which has sparked widespread anger across the province, shows the learner being physically attacked by fellow students. The incident has led to protests from parents and learners, disrupting academic activities at the school.
The victim’s family has urged authorities to involve social workers to address the perpetrators’ behavior. “I want those students to be engaged in social groups where they learn about the impact of bullying,” said a family member. “They need to understand the harm they’ve caused.”
Authorities Respond
The Eastern Cape Department of Education has suspended five learners linked to the assault. Provincial officials have condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for decisive action.
“If our schools become places of gender-based violence and femicide, then our future is at risk,” said a department representative. “These are the future citizens of our country, and such behavior must be dealt with firmly under the law.”
Police have also been instructed to investigate, with the possibility of criminal charges.
Community Demands Expulsions
Angry community members in Mdantsane are calling for the perpetrators to be expelled. “They don’t act like children; they don’t want peace,” said one resident. “Their behavior is unacceptable, and some of them must go.”
An official investigation is underway, with a detailed report expected soon. Meanwhile, the case has reignited discussions about school safety and the urgent need for anti-bullying measures in South African schools.
