Police are investigating a horrific shooting in Protea Glen, Soweto, that left two people dead and three others injured after an off-duty police captain allegedly opened fire at a birthday celebration before turning the gun on himself.
What Happened?
The incident occurred late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday during a birthday party for the captain’s ex-girlfriend, who was also a police officer. Witnesses reported that the captain called her aside for a private conversation inside the house before shooting her. He then allegedly shot her brother and fired at others at the gathering, injuring three more people.
When private security and law enforcement responded to an alarm, the suspect panicked, asking if police had been called, before taking his own life.
Victims and Aftermath
The deceased include the female officer and her brother, while three others were wounded—two have since been discharged from the hospital, and one remains in ICU with a spinal injury. Two children present at the scene managed to escape unharmed.
Community and Leadership React
Local Ward Councilor Phelelani Sindani, who spoke with the grieving families, described the shock and devastation, noting that the couple had no known history of violent disputes. The families are now arranging logistics for burials in their respective home provinces.
The tragedy has raised concerns about gender-based violence (GBV), particularly involving law enforcement officers. Councilor Sindani urged police leadership to provide better mental health support for officers, stating, “These are the people who ought to protect us, yet we’re seeing them as perpetrators or victims.”
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have opened cases of double murder and attempted murder. Colleagues of the deceased officers have visited the family but have not yet provided official statements.
As the community mourns, the incident has reignited calls for systemic changes in addressing domestic violence and mental health crises, even within the ranks of those sworn to serve and protect.
