A somber atmosphere enveloped the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria, as 27 victims of a brutal attack were laid to rest in a mass burial on Friday. The funeral drew a large crowd of grieving residents from within and outside the community, mourning the loss of innocent lives, including women and children.
The victims’ bodies were transported from the morgue to the community, plunging the state capital into mourning. Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded as men, women, and children wept uncontrollably, bidding a painful farewell to their loved ones.
During the burial, government officials and community leaders addressed the rising insecurity in the region. The governor vowed to take decisive action, stating, “No land will be taken. The government is doing everything possible to ensure that even those lands that have been taken are recovered by the grace of God.”
He condemned the killings, declaring, “These are corpses of innocent people. What did they do? Nothing. We cannot allow this to happen again… This is the last time we will have this in our land.”
Emotions ran high as speakers at the open-field Christian burial service called for justice. One distraught mourner cried out, “Why only our land? Why Plateau? Look at the number of innocent women, men, and children. My God, arise! Let the blood of the innocent cry for vengeance.”
The burial concluded with the remains of the victims being interred in a mass grave. The tragic event has reignited calls for stronger security measures to prevent further violence in the region.
Authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators, but residents demand swift action to bring an end to the recurring bloodshed.
