Cape Town’s Motorsport Legacy Reignited

Speed Classic Cape Town
Speed Classic Cape Town

Motorsport returns to the heart of Cape Town this October as the Speed
Classic Cape Town takes over Philip Kgosana Drive for a two-day
invitational spectacle of speed, heritage, and horsepower on 25–26 October
2025.

Set against one of the world’s most iconic backdrops, this brand new event
marks the thrilling rebirth of competitive hillclimb racing in the Mother
City — a crowd-pleasing pre- and post-war tradition that started in 1912 and
saw competitors showing off their cars and skills on Camps Bay Drive,
Signal Hill Road and Kloof Road. The last Camps Bay hillclimb was
reportedly held in 1962.

Now, over six decades later, history will roar back to life.

Backed by Motorsport South Africa and the City of Cape Town, Speed
Classic Cape Town revives the passion of the past with a modern, dynamic
twist — blending high-performance motoring with curated lifestyle
experiences in an open and electric atmosphere that invites all
Capetonians to feel the thrill.

The two-day event features two exclusive invitational competitions under
Club Status:

  • Classic Car Saturday (25 October), a celebration of vintage
    engineering and timeless design.
  • King of the Mountain (26 October), where modern-day speed
machines battle it out for glory over 2.1km of twisting tarmac and
    150 metres of vertical climb.

“We’re not just creating another motorsport event,” says co-founder Garth
Mackintosh. “We’re building a celebration of legacy, innovation, and
craftsmanship. And we want every Capetonian to be part of it.
The event is family-friendly and has something to offer everyone. From
purists to dreamers to the curious, for those who appreciate design beauty
and the engineering marvels these machines are, to the speed enthusiasts
who revel in ultimate motoring performance.”

With open paddocks, roaring demo runs, local food vendors, luxury
hospitality lounges, and vibrant activations, the Speed Classic Cape Town
promises something for everyone — whether you’re there for the noise, the
nostalgia, the speed, or just a fantastic time.

Driver applications are now open via www.speedclassic.capetown, and
close on 15 August 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by 22 August.
Motorsport enthusiasts will be able to purchase their General Access,
Grandstand or Hospitality tickets via Webtickets from 1 August 2025. Cape
Town, start your engines. Your mountain awaits.
